According to the Health and Safety at Work Act, your employer has a responsibility to keep you as safe as they reasonably can at work. This involves giving you adequate training, supervision and equipment to work with.

If you feel that your employer has fallen short in any of these areas and you have suffered an injury, you could be entitled to compensation. Read through our advice below to find out if you could make a claim against your employer.

Assessing the Risks

First and foremost, your employer must assess the risks in your working environment. Whether they be areas where you could potentially slip, trip or fall, or dangerous substances you could be working with, your employer has to make you aware of these potential dangers and keep a record of them.

Creating a Safe Environment

As far as they reasonably can, your employer must also create a safe working environment to work in. if you behave in an unsafe manner entirely of your own accord, your employer is not responsible if you suffer an injury as a result of your actions.

However, there are many instances where your employer could easily be found negligent. If, for example, they have not given you adequate training, teaching you how to lift heavy objects, and you suffer from a back injury after trying to lift something, you may be entitled to compensation.

Reporting Incidents

Finally, your employer must also report any accidents or injuries that occur at work. This way, they have a legal record of what happened, what caused the incident to happen, and the treatment the employee has received.
