Bicycle Accident Claims
Every day more than 2 million cyclists in the UK take to the road, including members of The Claims Partnership team. On average one cyclist loses their life every three days and 25 people are seriously injured. In total, there are an average of 20,000 casualties, injured in cycling accidents, every year in the UK.
Cycling should be a safe and healthy activity, but frequently cycling accident claims present some of the most difficult and distressing cases that The Claims Partnership have to deal with.
At The Claims Partnership, we do not just investigate the physical injuries that you suffer, but are aware that the psychological aspect of the accident is sometimes much worse than the physical pain. Victims of cycle accidents frequently never returned to riding a bike. They often avoid the road where the accident happened, suffer nightmares and require counselling. At The Claims Partnership we routinely have our client’s assessed by a Psychiatrist to investigate this aspect of their injuries and claim cyclist compensation, as well as arranging for counselling or other therapy.
Common causes of Cycling Accidents
Cycle accidents are often caused by inattentive drivers who:
- Do not look out for or see the cyclist
- Underestimate the speed of a cyclist
- Presume that because a cyclist is more vulnerable, that they should give up their right of way.
- Drive out of driveways or parking bays without looking
- Turn without looking
- Drive whilst impaired by drugs or alcohol

What to do after a cycling Accident
Obtain driver and witness details-and be sure to get this information, even if the police have attended the accident scene.
Document what happened – take photographs of the accident scene and vehicles and as soon as you are able, write down everything you can remember about the accident.
Secure the evidence – do not replace your helmet or get your bike repaired. If you have to do so, take photographs of the damage to your bicycle and ensure the repairer is willing to prepare a report listing the damage to the vehicle and the cost of repair.
Report the accident to the police – you should do this at the time of the accident, even if you think you may not be seriously injured at the time. The effects of cycle accidents sometimes do not become apparent for an hour or two.
Refuse to deal directly with the drivers insurance company – frequently, the guilty driver’s insurance company will contact you to offer you you money to stop the cycle claim. Insurance companies will only do this where they know that their driver is responsible and will only offer a fraction of the true value of your claim. You should always speak to an independent solicitor before dealing with a guilty driver’s insurance company.
